A total closure of Front Street north of Binghamton is affecting residents and businesses in the town of Chenango.
The state’s Department of Transportation said the closure of the street – also known as US Route 11 – is expected to last ten days.
Construction of a second roundabout is nearing completion, resulting in the closure of the normally busy Interstate 81 Exit 5. Motorists should pay attention to detour signs on the freeway and on Front Street.

The major traffic disruption began early Monday morning. Construction workers were busy late into the afternoon with multiple simultaneous operations that will eventually connect local traffic with connections to Interstates 81, 86 and 88.
A major change to the traffic pattern was implemented as part of the Interchange Overall Improvement Project on June 18. It was then that another roundabout to the south was opened to traffic.
Although many people driving through the area were surprised by the change, no major problems were reported when the roundabout was put into operation. There were traffic backups during periods of high volume during morning and afternoon trips.

Workers at a McDonald’s restaurant said the closure of Front Street and the freeway interchange led to a significant increase in business on Monday.
Nearby residents observed the construction activity and indicated that they were pleased with the traffic changes that are about to be implemented.
A person who has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years said the construction work was “fun”. He acknowledged that the diversions were a little inconvenient, but noted that they wouldn’t stay in place for long.
The DOT has scheduled the roundabout operation in an effort to complete major work before the start of Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally at Otsiningo Park on August 5.
