NEW DELHI: Exasperated by the persistence of high pollution levels in Delhi despite Central and NCT governments claiming that all possible measures have been taken to control it, the Supreme Court on Thursday gave the two 24 hours to propose effective measures to deal with the problem and implement the court’s directives.
A bench by Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant made it clear to the two governments not to “force” him to issue orders against them. He said he was concerned that the level of pollution continues to rise even though cases of thatch burning have declined.
The Supreme Court gave them until 10 a.m. on Friday to present additional measures to be taken to control the situation.

Informing the court of the Delhi government’s performance report, senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi said he impounded 1,578 old polluting vehicles in November and that 30 lakh texts were sent to owners to have them checked. emission levels of their vehicles. The court said it was an emergency and government officials needed to be creative and explore effective mechanisms to deal with the situation.
“We must do something extraordinary or the situation will not improve,” said the judiciary, adding that it would adopt new ordinances if the efforts and proposals of governments did not lead to a decrease in the level of pollution . “We are waiting for serious action from you. If you cannot do it by tomorrow, we will. We are giving you 24 hours,” the bench said.
At the start of the hearing, lead lawyer Vikas Singh, representing the petitioner, argued that construction work on the Central Vista should also be suspended, as the level of pollution in the city remains high and no development work to the detriment public health should only be allowed.
