Opposition SL submits impeachment and no-faith motions to oust government and Prez

In its motion of no confidence in the government, the opposition accused the prime minister and ministers of failing in their collective responsibility to inform parliament of the financial situation. Making multiple accusations, the opposition accused the government of failing to provide basic facilities like food, clothing and shelter to its people and made Sri Lanka the country with the lowest economic development in ‘South Asia.

“Citizens have been subjected to unbearable inflation by printing more than Lkr 3 trillion and the government has never informed Parliament about it,” the opposition said.

The opposition also blamed the government for its arbitrary decision to ban chemical fertilizers and jeopardize the country’s food security, destroyed the economy by not providing fuel and cooking gas and importing gas substandard and killing eight people due to gas explosions. The government has also severely inconvenienced people by not providing electricity, essential medicines and other equipment to run hospitals. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the government “did not follow” the advice given by medical experts and thus allowed the deaths of more than 10,000 people.

In its impeachment motion, the opposition accused President Gotabaya Rajapaksa of abusing his powers on April 1 by imposing a state of emergency and a social media ban to prevent any demonstrations against him. The opposition has accused the Rajapaksa government of killing a protester during a public demonstration demanding fuel.
