Savage Avengers # 25 sees the last of Marvel’s heroes fight a losing battle against a villain who has become a better time traveler than Kang.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Savage Avengers # 25, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The Savage Avengers have relentlessly searched for a way to stop the ancient evil wizard Kulan Gath from taking over the world. For Conan de Cimmeria, it has been a never-ending fight for most of his life. With Kulan Gath now killing nearly every Marvel hero in his conquest of the globe, Conan has turned to desperate action in the hope of turning the situation around. Acting on one of Doctor Strange’s last requests, Conan turned to one of the Avengers’ deadliest foes, Kang the Conqueror, for help. Unfortunately, Savage avengers # 25 (by Gerry Duggan, Patch Zircher, Java Tartaglia and Travis Lanham of VC) reveals that the Conqueror is of little help against Gath, who appears to have overtaken Kang as the universe’s first time traveler.

When Kulan Gath conquered the world, he kept Doctor Strange alive long enough for the Wizard Supreme to witness the full extent of the Mad Wizard’s cruelty. In his final moments, Strange was found by Conan, and he gave the Cimmerians instructions on how to find their last hope for survival. By following the wizard’s instructions, Conan was able to enlist the help of Kang the Conqueror, who understood the threat posed by Kulan Gath due to his previous experience with the ancient wizard. It turns out that the Conqueror once formed a “Kang Corps” to stand up against Gath, but withdrew in time when his forces were defeated. Although he has mobilized his campaigns at different times, the cannibalistic wizard has managed to stay one step ahead of Kang all along the way. For Conan, that means there’s nowhere in time he can go where his nemesis isn’t already waiting for him.

When Conan suggests going back in time before Kulan Gath amassed his dark powers, Kang informs the Cimmerian that the wizard has managed to protect his young self through all ages. From the way it sounds, Kulan Gath has managed to become ubiquitous within the confines of his own timeline, a feat that has left him literally untouchable.

While there are an almost endless number of tactics and weapons that Conan can use in his endeavors, Kang assures him that none of them have proven useful so far. Turns out, this isn’t the first time Conan and Kang have had this conversation. Conan might not remember it, but he’s fought that same battle before and he’s lost every time. Not only did Kang have to carry the burden of defeat over and over again, but he’s done it for so long that he now sees the cycle as an unbreakable time loop.

Kang has had many names over the years, and he has suffered many losses under each of them, but nothing has ever compared to the crushing and endless defeat he suffered by Kulan Gath. Given the severity of the threat, it’s no wonder Kang was so willing to endure loss so many times.

Even with this knowledge, Conan remains hopeful that the circle can be broken despite the desperate odds Kang has laid at his feet. However, if the barbarian is unable to do what the conqueror finds impossible, the time traveler runs the risk of being defeated once and for all by the most evil mage in the entire Marvel Universe.
