WASHINGTON – Supreme Court justices earned $800,000 in book royalties last year, a lucrative supplement to their judicial salaries, according to financial reports released Thursday.
By far the largest payment went to Judge Amy Coney Barrett, $425,000 for an as-yet-unpublished book and likely the first installment of a $2 million deal she signed shortly. long after joining the tribunal in 2020.
The judges are being paid $274,200 this year for their work on the bench; Chief Justice John Roberts gets a little more, $286,700.
The biggest advances so far have gone to Justices Clarence Thomas and Sonia Sotomayor, who each received more than $1 million for their stories of their rise from poverty to the nation’s highest court.
In total, Sotomayor has earned over $3 million in advances and royalties for his memoir, “My Beloved World”, and other books.
Barrett writes about how judges should avoid letting personal feelings shape their decisions, Politico reported.

Judge Neil Gorsuch received $250,000 in royalties last year and $900,000 since 2016 from HarperCollins. His book, “A Republic, If You Can Keep It”, was published in 2019. Gorsuch also brought home a pair of $700 cowboy boots he received as a gift from the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society.
Sotomayor, a prolific author since joining the court in 2009, collected $115,000 in royalties and also reported a smaller payment, $5,125, to potentially transform her children’s book, “Just Ask!” in a television or video production.

Judge Stephen Breyer, who is retiring when the court wraps up in early summer, brought in $7,800 in royalties from Penguin Random House.
