Astrology has been an integral part of Indian culture for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Millions of people continue to seek the services of astrologers, even today, in a busy 24/7 world, relying on astrology to shed light on an uncertain future.
As with most things in 2021, accessing such services is not easy for many who seek advice, but between juggling work and home, there is a lack of time to accommodate such services. This is where a startup like AstroTalk arrives, providing clients with real-time access to over 1,500 monitored astrologers anytime, day or night. For a fee, these astrologers provide all the astrological services one needs, and whatever medium you are comfortable receiving the service in, be it text, audio, or video.
Planned in existence, and to be successful
Puneet Gupta, the founder of AstroTalk, started his life as an unbeliever. An incredibly accurate prediction in 2015, he says, changed his life and convinced him of the effectiveness of astrology.
In 2015, Gupta was hired as an engineer, a job he resumed after the bankruptcy of his previous startup. An entrepreneur at heart, Gupta was unhappy with his job and wanted to move on, but felt he couldn’t risk a steady income for another risky proposition.
One of his senior colleagues, seeing his dilemma, offered him an astrology reading. Initially resistant to the idea, but influenced by his colleague’s firm belief in his abilities, Gupta relented.
Gupta’s colleague predicted he would quit his job and found a successful startup, but in April 2017 that startup would falter due to the departure of his partner. However, she added that Gupta would then create another more successful startup shortly thereafter, which would grow exponentially until 2026.
Inspired by his words, Gupta quit, started a startup, and it then escalated from March 2017, when his partner left.
Stunned by this turn of events and the accuracy of his colleague’s predictions, Gupta became a believer and was inspired to bring these services to everyone through an app. AstroTalk was thus born.
In four years, the app has served over two million customers, says Gupta
Building a 24/7 astrology hotline is not easy
To bring astrology services to a modern smartphone-based world, Gupta’s first challenge was to hire knowledgeable astrologers that people could trust. These astrologers not only needed a deep understanding of astrology, but also an empathy and understanding that could well translate into audio conversations or text discussions.
“The biggest challenge for us from the beginning to this day is finding real astrologers. We receive thousands of resumes from all over India, but less than 5% of applicants can validate our interview process. There are a lot of self-proclaimed astrologers out there, so it takes around 5-7 interviews to identify the right astrologer, ”Gupta explains.
Second, an almost obsessive need to “serve the customer in the best possible way” is crucial, Gupta adds. For example, AstroTalk initially offered only consultation services offered by video. However, discussions with customers revealed that they preferred an audio-only option, which AstroTalk subsequently began to offer. The privacy offered by this audio-only medium led to further growth, inspiring Gupta to then offer a text-only option that further contributed to AstroTalk’s reach and retention.
“Learning here was the only way to create the best product, is to talk to customers and continue to do the best for them,” Gupta explains. “If you solve customer problems, they will solve all of your business problems. ”
AstroTalk’s plans for its future
Currently, AstroTalk is already generating over Rs 32 lakh per day in revenue, providing over 140,000 minutes of daily consultation through over 1,500 approved astrologers. For the curious, Gupta says about 68,000 of those minutes are spent advising people on love, relationships, and marriage, and the rest on jobs, careers, and business.
A significant portion of AstroTalk’s business comes from overseas as well, and in the near future Gupta would like to focus more on international markets including USA, Canada, Singapore, etc. He also plans to hire more than 10,000 astrologers by 2022 and introduce the service to more clients by offering a free consultation for new users.
The service is easily accessible through the Astrotalk app and astrotalk.com. Astrologers and their fees are clearly indicated, along with their specialization, languages they speak, experience and availability
