Adam Sandler recalled how he met Bruce Springsteen at the gym when he was a cast member on Saturday Night Live and how his colleagues didn’t believe him…at first.

Sandler told the story during a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers while promoting his new Netflix movie Hustle. Sandler begins, “I love Bruce Springsteen… So I went to a gym, for example, on 60th Street on the East Side. I used to train. I was like, ‘I’m not as funny as everyone else on the show, but I’m going to look better.'”

He continues: “I train in this real shitty gym. I forget the name. But anyway, I keep seeing this guy. I’m like, ‘This guy looks like Bruce Springsteen.’ So I’m like, ‘Oh, that can’t be Bruce Springsteen.’ Anyway, I’m going, ‘From this angle, he looks like Bruce Springsteen. We train in the same gym. There’s no way he’s in that shitty gym. Bruce Springsteen passes, I’m on the thing that [mimes doing the chest press]…this one I do that. He stops right at me, I look at Springsteen. I am like this is Bruce Springsteen.’ He goes, ‘Hey.’ I go, ‘Hey.’ And he says, ‘I know you,’ and I say, ‘Do you know you?’ And he says, ‘You’re, uh, Allan Stanley.’ And I say, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah.’ “

At this point, the studio audience understandably burst into laughter. However, Sandler continues his story, but there is a problem: none of his SNL her castmates believe her story.

“So anyway, I come back to the show, and I see [Chris] Farley. I’m like, ‘Man, I saw Bruce Springsteen at the gym.’ Sandler said. “He’s like, ‘No, you didn’t.’ I go, ‘He knew me! He knew me!’ “And he’s like, ‘There’s no way this is – there’s no way!’ I say: ‘He called me Allan Stanley, but he knew me, he recognized me in the series!’ »

But then came Sandler’s redemption.

“Two years later, Springsteen is the musical guest on the show, and he comes by and he says hello to everybody. And I’m standing there, I’m like, ‘There’s no way [he remembers me],’ right? Then he looks at me and says, ‘Hey, man,’ and everyone looks and he says, ‘Are you still going to that gym?’ And I was like, ‘That’s right.’ “
